What is hospice care?

Whole-person care for a serious illness

Hospice is specialized care for people with a life-limiting illness — focused on comfort rather than cure. It brings together nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers to care for the body, mind, and spirit, and to support the whole family.

Answers before you decide

Who is eligible for hospice care?

Hospice is for people with a life-limiting illness and a prognosis measured in months rather than years, when the goals of care shift from cure to comfort. A physician referral helps, but families can call us directly and we will help determine eligibility.

Does choosing hospice mean giving up?

No. Hospice is a change in the goal of care, not a withdrawal of care. Many patients feel better with focused symptom management, and some improve enough to be discharged.

How much does hospice cost?

For eligible patients, hospice is covered in full by Medicare, Medicaid, and most commercial insurance and TRICARE plans — including visits, medications related to the illness, and equipment.
